Morgan Rielly Will Face-off Against Consensus First Overall Pick Auston Matthews in WHC Semi-Finals

After Canada’s 6-0 blow out over Sweden in the quarter finals, they are set to face-off against the Americans in the semi finals of the IIHF Men’s World Hockey Championships. The game is definitely a game to watch for both Canadian and American hockey fans as well as Maple Leaf fans.

It is especially intriguing for Maple Leaf fans because it will be featuring both superstar defenseman Morgan Rielly and consensus first overall pick Auston Matthews.

The two teams have already met in the tournament and the score was one-sided. Canada won the game 5-1 in what was the first game of the tournament for both teams. In the first meeting between the two teams Rielly finished a plus 1 and led the Canadians in ice time playing 20:48 minutes. Matthews finished minus 1 and recorded 3 shots.

Both players have had good tournaments so far and will need to continue to play well to help their respective teams advance to the finals.

Morgan Rielly has been a solid defenseman for Team Canada throughout the tournament. Rielly has been somewhat quiet statistically speaking so far but, has played a strong two-way game and has been a key player for Canada. To date he has recorded 1 goal and 3 points in 8 games for the Canadians and currently sits at plus 8.

In a tournament filled with an abundance of high end NHL players, 18-year-old Auston Matthews has been the talk of the tournament. Matthews currently leads the Americans in goals with 5 as well as points with 8. Throughout this tournament Matthews has continued to showed why he is such a highly rated prospect.

All in all Canada vs. USA games are always exciting to begin with. But, this one should be even more exciting for Leaf fans. They get the chance to watch current Maple Leafs star Morgan Rielly face off against potential Leaf and first overall pick Auston Matthews.
